Delhi Government Seizes 250 Old Vehicles Ahead of G20 Summit; Check Details Here

Around 250 old vehicles have been seized by the Delhi government as part of the action taken ahead of the G20 summit, an official said. Between January and October last year, registration of 50 lakh vehicles was canceled and the enforcement officers of the transport department are keeping a close watch on the situation.

This is being done to ensure that such vehicles do not ply in Delhi before the G-20 summit. The official claimed that they are one of the main sources of pollution.
The official said 80 teams have been formed around the national capital to seize these vehicles and shift them to the scrapyard.

In 2018, the Supreme Court banned diesel and petrol vehicles older than 10 and 15 years, respectively, in Delhi. It said that vehicles violating the order would be confiscated. The 2014 order of the National Green Tribunal prohibits parking of vehicles older than 15 years in public places.

This move by the Delhi Traffic Police comes as an attempt to beautify and transform Delhi ahead of the summit. Sometime back, the Delhi government ordered drivers of all passenger vehicles, such as autos and cabs, to wear the mandatory gray uniform. According to an order issued by the Transport Department on Monday, failure to comply can attract a fine of Rs 10,000 on the driver.

Besides this, the MCD will undertake a 15-day campaign to clean roads and remove temporary and permanent encroachments in the national capital to beautify the area ahead of the G20 summit in September. Simultaneously, overhead cables will also be rearranged or removed at places deemed appropriate.

On 1 December, India assumed the presidency of the G20 for a full year. 55 sites in India will host over 200 meetings. Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the European Union are all members.
