My Policeman, a romantic drama based on Bethan Roberts’ bestseller, has been released amazon prime Videos recently. The film explores the lives of three young friends – Tom (Harry Styles), Marion (Emma Corrin), and Patrick (David Dawson) and the consequences of their choices in two different timelines. A gay romance set in 1950s Britain, My Policeman highlights the oppression of homosexuality in that era.
Actor David Dawson, who plays Patrick, Tom’s (Stiles) boyfriend in the film, spoke exclusively to News18 about his preparations for the role. Chat Excerpts:
What was it like playing a closeted gay man in the 1950s?
Interestingly, in fact, it is not that he is not secretive. I think that’s why I was so attracted to this character. He is someone who is incredibly proud of his sexuality, knows who he is and the world he lives in. It is the rules of the society in which he lives that is stopping him from living his life to the fullest as he wants to. What I love about her is she is incredibly adept at, through necessity, leading two very different personas in life.
One that makes him a respected figure in society, but also enables him to achieve his ambitions. And then we see another side of the man when he’s alone in his apartment, where you see the authentic Patrick, where he’s allowed to be himself when we see a man who, like everybody else This world just wants to find love and happiness.
Did you read the original novel before picking up the movie?
No, I didn’t really know about the novel. But I’ve been fortunate enough to work on a number of projects that are based on books that I’ve always loved to go back to – after you’ve read the script – and find little gems, little nuggets of detail. Reading this for more nuances that you can sometimes bring into your performance.
How relevant do you think the themes explored in this film are to today’s world?
Even though this is a period film about 50s Britain, we have to acknowledge that the kind of society Patrick, Tom and Marion live in is present in many places around the world. So hopefully, it has poignancy.
What was it like romancing Harry Styles on screen?
When you read the script for the first time, you know it’s really a story to work on, you hope you’re going to be working with someone you can totally trust and who’s incredible. are intimately connected to the earth and will provide you with a great level of communication through the process. And I found all of that and more in Harry. It was a pleasure working with him from day one. And yeah, I think that’s part of the reason why this project was so special to me, I guess.
