Dalit man thrashed by wife’s brother for allegedly not converting to Christianity

A man belonging to the Dalit community has been admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital here after being seriously injured when his wife’s brother, who is a doctor, was allegedly forced to practice his religion, Christianity, in this south Kerala. was beaten up for refusing his demand to convert to district, police said on Wednesday. Police said the incident took place on October 31, two days after the woman left the house and married her lover against the wishes of her family.

According to the husband’s mother, the police did not take any action on her complaint. The police have denied the allegation, stating that the FIR under the Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act was registered on the same day the complaint was received.

The incident came to light after TV channels aired CCTV footage of a violent attack on the man after his wife’s brother had allegedly invited him to persuade him to convert to his religion at his residence in Chirayinkizhu. Police said that the investigation has been started to arrest the absconding accused since the incident.

According to an official of the Chirayinkizhu police station – where the complaint was lodged – preliminary investigation revealed that someone on the husband’s part allegedly spoke inappropriately to the wife’s mother at her residence, which instigated the incident. Police said it is the couple and the husband’s family’s version that she was beaten up for not converting to Christianity.

Police said the woman’s brother, a doctor who runs a hospital in Ernakulam, is absconding and his mobile use has been traced to Tamil Nadu. Describing the events after the incident, the police said that the couple got married on October 29 at a temple and after that the woman’s father lodged a complaint that his daughter was missing.

Thereafter, when the couple came to the police station, the father asked the daughter to come back with him and later promised to marry them properly, the officer said, adding that however, she left with her husband. The next day, the woman’s father and brother visited their husband’s family and they also went to a church to discuss organizing a wedding there.

The officer said that later the same day, they also went to the woman’s house to meet her mother and there, someone from the husband’s side allegedly spoke inappropriately to the woman’s mother, which escalated the matter and her brother harassed her husband. got beaten up.
