Cyclone Mocha May Intensify Into Storm By Tomorrow, Says IMD

Kolkata: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in a bulletin said that the low-pressure area over southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining south Andaman Sea on Tuesday became a well-marked low-pressure area. “The low pressure area over southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining south Andaman Sea has formed into a well marked low pressure area over the same region today, 9th May 2023 at 0530 IST. It is very likely to intensify into a Depression in the same area till today evening,” said an official statement. The IMD further mentioned that it may intensify into Cyclonic Storm Mocha by May 10.

“It is very likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm over southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of east central Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea on May 10. Initially likely to move north-northwestwards till morning of May 12. It is very likely to recede slowly thereafter. And move north-northeastwards towards Bangladesh-Myanmar coasts,” the statement said.

Earlier, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Monday that people need not fear the cyclone as the state government is prepared to deal with the situation. CM Banerjee said, “There is no need to be afraid of the cyclone. If different circumstances arise, we will rescue people from the coastal areas, as the cyclone will move to Bangladesh and then to Myanmar.” (ANI)
