Cyclone Gulab Updates: Cyclone starts making landfall, six AP fishermen missing

Chennai: According to a bulletin of the Indian Meteorological Department, the process of landfall of Cyclone Gulab began on Sunday evening as it was expected to reach within Sunday night. The cyclone made landfall between Kalingapatnam in Andhra Pradesh and Gopalpur in Odisha.

According to the update of news agency ANI, due to the arrival of the cyclone in Srikakulam, Andhra Pradesh, there was heavy rain and strong winds.

On the other hand, five fishermen are feared missing in Srikakulam, Andhra Pradesh. Vajrapukotturu police station sub-inspector Govindrao said five fishermen from Srikakulam in Andhra Pradesh, while returning from the sea on Sunday evening, fell into the sea after their boat hit the strong waves near the Mandasa coast. Police and other officials are trying to rescue the fishermen.

Speaking to ANI, Srikakulam Joint Collector Sumit Kumar said, “The district administration has opened around 61 relief centers and shifted 1100 people to these centres.”

“Next 2 hours are critical. We are expecting wind speed of 90-100 km/h. Two teams of NDRF and 4 teams of SDRF have reached here. Heavy rains can cause floods, which is another challenge 19 Sumit Kumar said that the mandals in the district are flood prone.

Meanwhile, a PTI report reported that Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has set a ‘zero casualty’ target in vulnerable districts ahead of cyclone ‘Gulaab’ on Sunday. Earlier, Cyclone ‘Yes’ wreaked havoc in May and another cyclone is likely to hit the state within four months.
