Covid-19 curbs: Shanghai’s western half under lockdown, South Korea eases restrictions

New Delhi: Shanghai on Friday confined nearly 16 million people to the western part of the city after ending a four-day lockdown on the eastern side to curb the outbreak of cases in the country.

Shanghai emerged as the epicenter of China’s worst outbreak of the viral disease.

According to Bloomberg, nearly two-thirds of Shanghai’s population living in the western part of the Chinese financial center have been confined to their homes since 3 a.m. on Friday.

According to the report, the city’s daily infections rose from five in early March to nearly 6,000 this week, though they have since declined. Several patients have also succumbed to the infection in recent days at a large elderly-care hospital in Shanghai amid the Covid outbreak, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the situation.

However, Shanghai has not officially announced any COVID-related deaths or outbreaks in its elderly care centers since they emerged in March. The report said the deaths are a sign that authorities have publicly disclosed that infections are hitting Shanghai hard.

Thailand is reporting a record number of new infections for the second day in a row, bringing the death toll to more than five months. According to Bloomberg, the health ministry on Friday reported 28,379 confirmed cases in the past 24 hours, including 62 imported cases, and 92 deaths.

With infections showing signs of slowing, South Korea will ease measures including social distancing, allowing up to 10 people and restaurants to operate until midnight, according to Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum.

Currently, a maximum of 8 people are allowed in private gatherings, and restaurants and cafes must be closed by 11 pm. The eased measures will be effective from Monday.

South Korea reported 320,743 more coronavirus cases on Thursday, compared to a record 621,328 cases reported earlier in March.
