Unlike any other COVID vaccine, Zydus Cadila is currently seeking approval for its needle-free vaccine, which will use ‘jet injector’ technology to administer three doses. Instead of injecting the drug through a hole in the skin, the vaccine will use high pressure to inject the liquid directly through the top layer of the skin and into the underlying tissues.
While this may sound like a new discovery in the world of vaccines, it is an older technology, first demonstrated in 1866. This method of vaccination was also used for smallpox vaccination campaigns during the 1960s.
As far as needle-free vaccines are concerned, they can reduce the risk of hand soreness which is very prevalent in intramuscular injection and may also limit the emergence of side effects.
