Around 300 positive samples sent for genome sequencing amid rising outbreak of Kovid-19 in Delhi

Notably, Delhi recorded 366 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, while the positivity rate stood at 3.95 per cent as per the data shared by the city’s health department.

There were no fresh COVID-related fatalities. However, the COVID positivity rate in the national capital increased from 0.5 per cent to 3.95 per cent in a week.

Reports of infections from schools have raised concerns in the national capital, weeks after they were fully opened for offline classes after a gap of two years due to the pandemic.

Recently, amid the threat of a new coronavirus variant, around 300 samples taken from people who tested COVID positive in Delhi have been sent for genome sequencing, PTI reported on Friday, quoting official sources.

Sequencing is essentially being done to find out whether a newer version, such as XE, has circulated in the city.

The XE variant is a combination or recombinant of both the BA.1 and BA.2 sub-variants omicron,

Sources in PTI said that the sequencing will take around 7-10 days to be processed.

Meanwhile, schools in Delhi have been asked to temporarily shut down the entire campus or specific wing if a student or employee tests positive for COVID-19.

Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain had said that the AAP government is monitoring the COVID-19 situation and there is no reason to worry until a new form of concern is detected.

“Every day a new version is being generated because the virus is mutating,” he had said.
