Congress sends five of its 11 Goa MLAs to Chennai ahead of Presidential elections

The opposition Congress in Goa has shifted five of its 11 MLAs in the state to Chennai ahead of the July 18 presidential election. Five MLAs Sankalp Amonkar, Yuri Alemao, Altone D’Costa, Rudolf Fernandes and Carlos Alvares Ferreira were taken to Chennai soon after the assembly session ended on Friday evening. “All these MLAs went straight to Chennai after the session ended on Friday,” said a senior Congress leader. He said he would return directly to Goa to participate in the presidential election to be held on Monday.

The monsoon session of the Goa Legislative Assembly, which began on July 11, will continue till next Friday. However, six other MLAs from the opposition party – former chief ministers Digambar Kamat, Michael Lobo, Delilah Lobo, Kedar Naik, Alexo Sekera and Rajesh Faldesai – are not part of the group that went to Chennai, sources said. When contacted, Michael Lobo said he did not know why the five other MLAs were taken to Chennai. “I was not invited. I don’t know why he was taken to Chennai,” Lobo said.

Last Sunday, the Congress removed Michael Lobo as leader of the opposition in the assembly, accusing him and Kamat of “building ties with the BJP” for conspiring against the party and dividing the party’s state legislative wing. Put it. The party had said that five MLAs, including Lobo and Kamat, have gone out of touch. However, these MLAs participated in the proceedings of the Goa Legislative Assembly on Monday, the first day of the monsoon session, claiming that there was nothing wrong in it and that they were with the party. On Tuesday, 10 out of 11 MLAs attended the meeting chaired by senior leader Mukul Wasnik.

Goa Pradesh Congress Committee President Amit Patkar has filed a disqualification petition against Kamat and Lobo before the Speaker of the Assembly. Voting for the next presidential election will take place on 18 July. The race for Rashtrapati Bhavan is between Draupadi Murmu of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and Yashwant Sinha of the United Opposition.
