Conflict of interest complaint against MS Dhoni’s appointment as Team India mentor for T20 World Cup

The BCCI’s Apex Council on Thursday received a complaint against the appointment of former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni as the mentor of the Indian team for the T20 World Cup, citing a conflict of interest clause in the Lodha Committee reforms.

Former Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association life member Sanjeev Gupta, who has previously filed a series of conflict of interest complaints against players and administrators, has sent a letter to the apex council members saying Dhoni’s appointment violates the conflict of interest clause. under which a person cannot hold two posts.

Dhoni is also the captain of the Chennai Super Kings IPL franchise.

“Yes, Gupta has sent a letter to the members of the Apex Council including Saurav (Ganguly) and Jai (Shah). He has cited clause 38(4) of the BCCI constitution which states that a person cannot hold two different posts. The Apex Council will need to consult its legal team to examine its implications,” a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

It is understood that Dhoni being a player in one team and a mentor in another, raises questions that require clarity.

On the sidelines of the team announcement on Wednesday, Secretary Jay Shah named Dhoni as the mentor for WT20.

One of the most successful captains in the history of Indian cricket, the enigmatic wicketkeeper-batsman led India to two world titles – the 2007 T20 World Cup in South Africa and the 2011 ODI World Cup in India.

Dhoni is currently with his IPL team Chennai Super Kings, which is set to resume the league from September 19 in the UAE.

After retiring at the international level, he has kept a largely low profile, focusing on his IPL events and organic farming in his hometown Ranchi.
