Colds: 4 Asthma Symptoms You Should Be Watching For This Season

Restlessness, shortness of breath and chest tightness are commonly associated with asthma, but it is not even half of what patients feel during an asthma attack. Every asthma patient has their own experience, but one thing that connects everyone is that the experience is equally traumatic for any individual. Some describe it as a dull ache or tightness in the chest, as if air is sucked out of their lungs, while others describe it as ‘breathing through a crushed straw’.

What is asthma? This is a condition in which the airways that carry air to the lungs produce excess mucus, or it narrows, swells, making breathing movements difficult. When you breathe in irritants like dust, pollen, dry air, smoke, or pet dander, it acts as the icing on the cake. The airways become more swollen and the muscles around them tighten. In this condition, breathing becomes difficult and may even lead to asthma attacks.

To identify asthma symptoms, it is important for people to become familiar with what an asthma attack looks like. In a conversation with ETimes, Director and Internal Medicine at Max Hospitals-Saket, Delhi, Dr Rommel Tickoo shares 6 common symptoms of asthma:

breathlessness

According to Tikko, shortness of breath is one of the first symptoms of asthma. When there is swelling and narrowing of their airways, people have trouble breathing, as the transport of the required amount of oxygen to the lungs is disrupted. The trouble caused by shortness of breath forces the person to breathe rapidly on his own. It is during this rapid breathing period that wheezing sounds can be heard.

wheezing

Inflammation of the air duct narrows it, making breathing difficult and people unable to take in the required amount of oxygen. This causes a wheezing sound when people breathe. According to the doctor, after breathing a musical sound is produced during coughing and other problems.

Cough

Stimulants only trigger an asthma attack. Microscopic particles enter the airways, causing further irritation and inflammation. The stimulation stimulates the nerves that signal the brain to the muscles in the chest and abdomen to expel air from the lungs with coughing. Though the expert said that cough is not common in all asthma patients, cough related to asthma does not go away easily for those who suffer from acute respiratory condition. The situation can get worse in winters and the flu virus can also lead to asthma attacks.

chest tightness

Difficulty in breathing makes a person feel uncomfortable. This causes tightness in the chest, or sometimes the chest may feel bloated or constricted. Chest tightness occurs when air becomes trapped in the lungs, so you can’t breathe or exhale well.

According to the doctor, inhalers are the best way to keep the symptoms of asthma under control and prevent an asthma attack. People who are suffering from any chronic respiratory condition need to be careful in winters as the viral infection triggers an asthma attack and can lead to secondary symptoms like fever and, in the worst case, pneumonia.
