Child laborers of Madhya Pradesh rescued in Nippani are married: NGO | Hubli News – Times of India

The children are now stuck in shelter homes as the CWC can send them back home only after registering an FIR at the local police station under whose jurisdiction they were rescued. Despite the CWC directing the labor department to file a complaint at the Sadalga police station, it refused to do so, arguing that they were not child labourers. Due to lack of knowledge of Kannada language and the food being served here, children are suffering in the shelter homes.

However, the local tehsildars have pointed out that they are not bonded labourers, but contract laborers hired by sugar mills. Further inquiry revealed that six children (or three young couples) – three men and three women aged 15 and 16 – are married to each other.
District CWC chairperson Sister Lord Mary J told TOI: “When we came to know that some children have got married, we informed our counterparts in Barwani (MP). They will take appropriate action after these children are sent back. But the labor department has not lodged a complaint with the local police station, due to which we are not able to release them from the shelter home. The children were kept as bonded labour. I do not understand why the Labor Department is not taking this matter seriously. We had directed the department to register a complaint at the Sadalga police station before January 31.
Labor commissioner Venkatesh Shindihatti said the tehsildar has submitted a report stating that the children were not hired by the sugar mills, and hence they are not child labourers. “How can we file a complaint when the children have not worked. the NGO that saved them Children Can go ahead and file a complaint,” he said.
