Center approves CBI probe into Mahant Narendra Giri’s death following UP government’s request

The centre, on Friday, gave its approval for a CBI probe in the death of Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad president Mahant Narendra Giri. He was found hanging at Baghambari Math in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.

Following a request from the state government, the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) issued a notification for a CBI inquiry into the matter.

Giri was the president of India’s largest organization of sadhus. The sudden demise of a revered spiritual master under mysterious circumstances sent a wave of mourning across the country. The police had earlier recovered a handwritten suicide note from the Math which contained the names of three people including Anand Giri, a disciple of Mahant Narendra Giri.

The Uttar Pradesh Home Department said, “On the instructions of UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, a CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) inquiry has been recommended in the incident related to the tragic death of Akhara Parishad President Mahant Narendra Giri.” said on Wednesday.

The UP Police had constituted an 18-member SIT to investigate the death of the sadhu. The team has already taken one of Giri’s disciples into custody from Haridwar.

Postmortem was conducted to ascertain the cause of death and the report is awaited. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said that all aspects related to the death are being probed and the guilty will not be spared.
