Census: June 30 is the new deadline for change of jurisdiction in states

Even as census calculations have been postponed indefinitely due to the pandemic, the Center has extended the deadline for change of jurisdiction for all states to June 30, 2022. Earlier, the deadline was December 31, 2021.

According to sources in the Home Ministry, which oversees the functioning of the Registrar General of India, this was done at the request of the states as they have not been able to update the change in jurisdiction due to various reasons.

Before each census, states are required to inform the RGI about the changes in the number of notified districts, villages, towns and other administrative units such as tehsils, talukas and police stations in a state since the last census a decade ago. The boundaries of the administrative units have been sealed three months before the start of the census.
