The BSF has put its troops on high alert along the India-Pakistan border after intelligence inputs suggested terrorist infiltration plans and anti-national elements could create trouble during Republic Day in Jammu and Kashmir.
The BSF IG said, “Our inputs suggest that there are 104 to 135 terrorists on the launch pad ready to infiltrate this side.” He said that some guides have crossed the LoC and reached PoK and their movements are being monitored and their families are being continuously monitored.
At the BSF headquarters in Humhama on the outskirts of Srinagar, Babu said the overall situation along the Line of Control in Kashmir was peaceful since the ceasefire agreement between the two countries last year.
Another area of concern for the BSF is surveillance drones flown from the Pakistani side and the threat of weapons, bombs and material being dropped in Jammu and Kashmir. The BSF IG said that their men patrol 96 km along the LoC in Kashmir and the threat of drones is real. “We are getting our drones to counter the threat. A series of countermeasures also exist,” he said.
According to Jammu Frontier BSF IG DK Bura, troops were on high alert since last week to thwart “nefarious attempts by anti-national elements from across the border” to disrupt the security situation during Republic Day celebrations. “BSF has announced strict vigil along the border for two weeks,” he said in Jammu.
Bura said the BSF patrols are carrying out a massive operation to prevent terrorists and drug smugglers from digging tunnels for cross-border movement. Soldiers are hard on their jobs in “extremely adverse weather conditions,” he said.
His Kashmir frontier counterpart said the BSF had seized 17.3 kg of heroin worth Rs 88 crore from smugglers along the Line of Control last year.
