‘Bones sticking out’: 3 malnourished dogs from IIT-Madras run to the vet amid dog treatment

Three malnourished dogs suffering from severe skin infections and ill health were on Friday taken from the IIT-Madras campus to a private clinic for treatment. The development comes amid several reports outlining the pathetic condition of stray dogs in the prestigious educational campus. A local animal rights activist had earlier filed a complaint in the matter.

Importantly, the clinic’s veterinarians noted that the dogs have no history of vaccination or deworming, which was cited by the IIT-M management as the primary reason for the capture of stray dogs on the campus in October 2020.

Veterinarians found all three dogs to be in poor health, stating that two dogs have been placed in intensive care. Meanwhile, a Chennai-based NGO has adopted a third dog infected with sarcoptic mites, which cause severe itching.

According to the complaint, which was addressed to the city police commissioner and Mylapore deputy commissioner of police, animal activist Harish KB claimed that the registrar and management were responsible for illegally capturing 186 healthy stray dogs and keeping them in cages and chains.
