Blast in Ludhiana Court: Explosion while planting bomb, suspicion of IED and Pak Terror Module; NIA-NSG officers removed the body after 10 hours

An Improvised Explosive Device (IED) is suspected to have been used in the bomb blast that took place at 12.25 pm on Thursday in the district court of Ludhiana. One person was killed while 6 others were injured in this blast. Teams of NSG, NIA and National Bomb Data Center from Delhi reached the spot to investigate the blast. 10 hours after the blast, at 10.15 pm, the NSG team removed the body lying in the rubble from there and kept it in the mortuary of the Civil Hospital.

Bomb disposal squad and forensic experts from Chandigarh also reached the spot in the evening itself. On the other hand, the Union Home Ministry has sought a report from the Punjab government regarding this blast. Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi, Deputy CM Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and DGP of Punjab Police also reached the spot after the blast.

Police registered a case under sections 307, 302 of IPC and Explosives Act in Ludhiana’s Division No. 5 police station regarding this blast. This case was registered on the statement of ASI Sukhpal Singh, in-charge of court complex outpost. According to ASI, there was a loud explosion on the third floor at 12:30 pm on Thursday. Six people were injured in this while one person died on the spot. According to the Ludhiana Police Commissioner, the man who died was with the explosive and he also died due to the explosion while fitting the bomb.

The blast took place on the third floor at 12:25 pm on Thursday. On Thursday itself, Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi had a rally in Raikot, Ludhiana and the blast happened hours before his rally. According to the social worker who worked to clear the debris late in the evening, two bodies have come out in the debris. After this, on the instructions of the NIA, the Ludhiana Police Commissioner stopped the work of removing the debris. It is feared that there may be some more bodies under the rubble.

The injured in the blast were Sandeep Kaur (31 years) of Rajkot village in Ludhiana and Sharanjit Kaur (25 years) of Jamalpur were admitted to the civil hospital. Manish Kumar (32 years) resident of Police Colony was admitted to CMC Ludhiana. Kuldeep Singh Mand (50 years) and Krishan Khanna (75 years) are undergoing treatment at DMC Ludhiana. Apart from this, one more person is injured.

Decomposed body recovered from bathroom

The blast took place in the bathroom on the third floor of the Ludhiana Court Complex. Due to this, two walls of the bathroom collapsed and the floor came down to the second floor. A mutilated body was found on the spot after the blast. It is being feared that this body is of the person who was fitting the bomb. In this blast, his face and legs got ragged. The forensic team collected the torso, legs and head. The body is being examined.

Ludhiana Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said that preliminary investigation has revealed that the person whose dead body was found in the bathroom was with him. He was probably fitting the bomb through an IED and the blast happened at the same time. When asked about the angle of the suicide bomber, the police commissioner only said that in the preliminary investigation, it was found that the deceased was doing explosive plant at the spot and at the same time the blast took place. Due to the terrorist angle in this blast, the central investigation agency NIA and NSG became active. Officials of both the agencies reached Ludhiana from Chandigarh and New Delhi for investigation. High Court took cognizance of the incident
The Punjab and Haryana High Court took cognizance of the blast in the Ludhiana court and expressed concern. The High Court ordered to enhance the security of all court complexes in Punjab and Haryana. Simultaneously, a meeting of police officers of Punjab-Haryana was called. The Bar Council of Punjab High Court has demanded a high-level inquiry into the incident by the SIT. Along with this, the command of the SIT has been requested to be given to a retired judge.

Section 144 extended till January 13 in Ludhiana

There is high alert all over Punjab and section 144 is already in force in Ludhiana. After the bomb blast, the district administration extended it till January 13 i.e. Lohri as a precaution. Security was beefed up at all other important places in the city as well.

Investigating agencies suspect that Pakistan-based terror module could be involved in the blast in Ludhiana. Recently, the bomb blast in Jalalabad and the tiffin bomb from across the border can also have some contact with this blast. According to the investigating agencies, the blast that took place in Jalalabad also happened while carrying the bomb from one place to another.
