BJP’s parliamentary board shrinks after Thaawarchand Gehlot as governor in Karnataka

With the transfer of former Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Thaawarchand Gehlot as the Governor of Karnataka on Tuesday, the Parliamentary Board, the highest decision-making body of the Bharatiya Janata Party, has seen its fifth vacancy.

According to a report in Hindustan Times, Gehlot, who is also the Leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha, has been a member of the Parliamentary Board since 2006. The board currently has seven members, four less than its full strength of 11 members. . The departure of Gehlot leads to a fifth vacancy.

Born on 18 May 1948 in Roopeta village of Nagda tehsil of Ujjain district, Gehlot graduated from Vikram University, Ujjain.

Gehlot represented Shajapur in the Lok Sabha from 1996 to 2009 but lost the 2009 general election. He was the General Secretary and Vice President of the Janata Party from 1977 to 1980. He was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1996, 1998, 1999. He also held the positions of Member, Committee on Agriculture, Member, Committee on Welfare. Member of Consultative Committee for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, 1996 and 1999, Ministry of Labour. He is the most prominent face of BJP for Scheduled Castes.

For the past one year, there has been speculation that party president JP Nadda will reconfigure the board which has seven members including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and party chief JP Nadda. Other members of the top panel are Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

In addition, BL Santosh is also a member of the apex panel as he is the BJP General Secretary (Organisation), a post reserved for pracharaks of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, the ideological base of the BJP.
