Bengal Meet To Mark Assam’s ‘jonaki Jug’ | Guwahati News – Times of India

GUWAHATI: Asam Sahitya Sabha (ASS), the apex literary organisation of the state, is set to bring together literary scholars from Assam and West Bengal at Calcutta University on Saturday (September 10) to mark the birth anniversary of the state’s cultural icon Bhupen Hazarika.
The scholars will revisit the contributions of Lakshminath Bezbaroa and other doyens of Assamese literature who ushered in the Jonaki Jug or dawn of romanticism in Assamese literature during their stay in Calcutta in the 19th century. Bhupen Hazarika was the bridge between Assam and Bengal, in the ‘City of Joy’.
ASS president Kuladhar Saikia said the theme of the seminar is ‘Retracing literary journey of Assamese authors in Kolkata (19th century)’. It has been organised by the Sabha in collaboration with Calcutta University.
“The Jonaki Jug of Assamese literature was ushered in due to the pioneering initiatives of stalwarts like Hem Chandra Goswami, Padmanath Gohain Baruah and Chandra Kumar Agarwala. From Calcutta, they took the lead to publish Jonaki maganize that marked the beginning of Jonaki Jug,” said Saikia.
