Bank holidays are effective as per the list issued by the Reserve Bank India Or RBI. For example, banks will remain closed in Bengaluru on Kanakadas Jayanti, but services will remain available in other parts of the country. The Reserve Bank of India has said that banks will get holidays under three brackets. These are Negotiable Instruments Act, Holiday, Real Time Gross Settlement Holiday and closure of accounts of banks. On these notified days, all banks across the country, including public sector, private sector, foreign banks, co-operative banks and regional banks, will remain closed.

All branches of banks are closed on Republic Day (January 26), Independence Day (August 15) and Gandhi Jayanti (October 2), Christmas Day (December 25). Banks are also closed on festivals including Diwali, Christmas, Eid, Guru Nanak Jayanti, Good Friday. RBI has made Sundays a compulsory holiday for all banks except the second and fourth Saturdays of every month. However, since holidays vary state-wise, lenders in your state may not close their shutters on all those days.

If we go by the Reserve Bank’s list of notified holidays during the current month of November, we can see that all banks across the country, except Bengaluru, remained closed on Diwali, which fell on November 4. On 19 November, banks remained closed throughout. Most parts of India closed on account of Guru Nanak Jayanti but operated in areas like Patna. Further, only weekend holidays on the same day will be applicable uniformly in all banks across India.
