Atrangi Re Movie Review: Dhanush’s heartwarming love story Sara Ali Khan gets an unexpected twist

Atrangi Re

Director: Aanand L Rai.

Cast: Akshay Kumar, Dhanush, Sara Ali Khan, Seema Biswas.

Sara Ali Khan, in the trailer of Atrangi Re, and in interviews, has been vocal about a woman’s right to love two men at the same time. Going into the movie, if you expect more than just lip service for women’s work, you may be disappointed. Atrangi Re, directed by Aanand L Rai, is colorful in its premise as well as the characters, but doesn’t seem like it on the surface. The narrative includes a major twist in the plot, which completely changes the message of the film.

Aanand L Rai has a penchant for neatly wrapping up an idea in colorful clothing, Bollywood dance sequences, with an assertive, interesting female character at the center of the story. We have seen in Tanu Weds Manu and Raanjhanaa. Atrangi Re’s Rinku seems like a natural next step for the director in his film repertoire.

Sara Ali Khan plays a ‘Dabangg’ girl from Bihar – there is no other word that could possibly describe her character Rinku, better. Orphaned at a young age, she has learned to fight for what she wants. Rinku is forced to marry a kidnapped doctor-in-the-making S Vishwanath Iyer (Dhanush), a Tamilian from Chennai, who visits her hometown.

Vishu has to get engaged to his girlfriend Mandakini aka Mandy (Dimple Hayati), daughter of his dean, while Rinku has been in love with a Muslim man for years – magician Sajjad Ali Khan (Akshay Kumar).

The film begins on a dramatic note with Rinku running away from home in a frenzy, and the same mood persists throughout the film. He is often seen running away from his problems in commuting. Despite being an emotional story, the spirit of the fast-paced drama has been successfully maintained.

Sara Ali Khan as the rustic and boisterous Rinku is perfect, a role for her. You relate to her from the very first scene, and she never comes across as awkward or inconsistent, even when she faces the most ridiculous threats to her grandmother.

Dhanush balanced Sara’s North Indian history with her calm, mature demeanor. Her scenes will often remind you of Raanjhanaa, though her character is quite the opposite here. Sagittarius charms you with subtle yet effective performances, and at times your heart goes out to him. He never tries to match Sara’s pitch, but instead keeps her low to let her shine in the scenes.

Atrangi Re, like Raanjhanaa, touches on many social issues in the backdrop of a love story that seems impossible in real life. But one can dream, and this is the hope the narrator has tried to pursue. The vibrant frame, exquisite production design and light-hearted approach keep the mood upbeat. There are never any dull moments in this colorful story.
