Assam: 11 killed in floods, landslides in 24 hours; Central teams will visit the affected areas: Amit Shah

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority said on Monday that 11 people have been killed in floods and landslides in the last 24 hours due to widespread rainfall. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also spoke to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma. He said central teams would visit the flood-affected areas of both the states to assess the damage.

“Spoke to CM Assam Shri @himantabiswa & CM Meghalaya Shri @SangmaConrad to discuss the situation in parts of both the states in the wake of heavy rains and floods. Modi government stands firmly with the people of Assam and Meghalaya in this hour of need,” Shah tweeted, adding, “An Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) visits flood-affected areas of Assam and Meghalaya to assess the damage. Will do After the earlier phase of floods, an IMCT visited the affected areas of Assam from May 26 to May 29, 2022.

The flood situation in the state is grim and has affected a population of 43 lakh in 33 out of 35 districts. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reviewed the flood situation in a meeting and directed air-dropping of food and other relief materials in heavily flooded areas.

Sarma also directed the Deputy Commissioners to keep stable teams of the health department ready and ensure daily visits of doctors to the relief camps set up for the flood-affected. He said that ambulances should be kept on standby to shift the critical condition patients to nearby hospitals.

The Chief Minister said that the officers should work in night shifts in all district hospitals and take special care of senior citizens, women and children. He directed the officials to plan circle-wise mega health camps with the help of nine medical colleges in the state to ensure that post-flood diseases are dealt with effectively.

The CM further said that the Air Force has assured the state government to unload petroleum and diesel in the severely affected areas. He said that the relief and rescue operations in Barak Valley would be stepped up by involving additional teams of NDRF from neighboring states of Manipur and Tripura.

Sarma also said that he is in touch with Sangma to restore traffic on the Jowai-Badarpur road which was badly damaged due to floods and landslides. Meanwhile, the North East Frontier Railway (NFR) has said that relief trains including petroleum and diesel and medical aid will be sent to the affected areas.

According to an ASDMA bulletin, the state has been battling devastating floods for the past one week, affecting 127 revenue circles and 5,137 villages in 33 districts. Around 1.90 lakh people have taken shelter in 744 relief camps. Relief material has been distributed from 403 temporary centers to the affected people who did not go to the camps. The NDRF, SDRF, police and other agencies have so far evacuated around 30,000 people to safer places, officials said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi He had called the Chief Minister of Assam on June 18 to inquire about the situation and assured him of all possible help from the Centre.
