Android 13 can finally bring this feature for smartphone users

Android 13 is going to be the next version to arrive for the smartphone later this year. The developer preview is already available, and the beta release timeline has been shared as well. We also got a brief rundown of the features coming to Android 13 a few weeks back.

And now in another report, it has been said that a new tool will come for Android users later this year. Android 13 is adding several APIs that let you control the brightness level of the flashlight on the phone.

This might seem like a handy feature that Android has somehow missed out on all these years. Especially considering that Samsung has packaged this device for a few years now, running on Android which has been optimized to offer more features than the vanilla Android version.

Apart from Samsung, no other Android phone manufacturer has been able to incorporate this tool. So, it looks like Google has now decided to push this feature through its stock version, in hopes that others can pick it up for their forked versions of the Android operating system. Two APIs named “getTorchStrengthLevel” and “turnOnTorchWithStrengthLevel” have been seen in the Android 13 codebase.

Until now, users of Android phones (except Samsung ones) had only one API, which helps you to toggle Flash on or off.

The new API is likely to help users change the brightness level of the torch, and set it based on their requirement. It’s funny that Google has taken so long to provide such a feature. You probably remember some feature phones that offer the ability to set the flashlight to a different level. Apple is another brand that has managed to pack this feature. So, it has been mostly regular Android phones that have been missed.

But just because Android 13 features these APIs doesn’t mean all brands will add it to their codebases.

Hence, we expect the next Pixel phone (likely to be the Pixel 7) to have this option. For others, we’ll have to see if they offer it.
