Cricket Australia (CA) has found a replacement for Justin Langer and is set to name Andrew McDonald as the new full-time head coach in the coming days, News Corp reported.

The report said McDonald – who was named interim coach of the team after 51-year-old Langer stepped down following disagreements over the extension of his contract – is set to accept the new men’s head coach role.

McDonald’s recently returned with the team from a grueling tour of Pakistan, in which Australia won the three-Test series 1-0 and also won honors in one-sided T20Is. Pakistan won the three-match ODI series 2–1.

A report by sen.com.au quoted News Corp as saying, “It has been reported that the CA hierarchy identified McDonald’s as their man at the end of last week and has since offered him the job. While final talks are underway, it is understood that the former Australian all-rounder will take over in the coming days.”

McDonald said before leaving for the Pakistan tour in February that he was waiting for Cricket Australia to sort out the specifics of his assignment. McDonald’s had said, “I’ll watch with interest where they land on that.”

The report added that CA wants a coach for all three formats and McDonald’s has “come around the idea”.

However, given the taxing nature of the job, CA is believed to have given “time off for specific series” as per the report.
