“Of these, 11,768 had darshan yesterday (July 14),” officials said.

Seven people, including five passengers and two porters, died on Thursday (July 14) on the Pahalgam-Chandanwadi track. Of these, two porters slipped off the track and died, while five pilgrims died of natural causes.

On Friday, another batch of 5,461 passengers left for the Valley from the Jammu camp in two security convoys. Of these, 3486 are going to Pahalgam base camp while 1975 are going to Baltal base camp.

Those using the Chhota Baltal route have to trek for 14 kms and return to the base camp on the same day after visiting the cave temple situated at 3888 m above sea level.

Those using the long, traditional Pahalgam route have to cover a distance of 48 kilometers for four days to reach the cave temple. Helicopter services are available for pilgrims on both the routes.

The cave temple has an ice stalagmite formation that subsides and waxes with the phases of the moon. Devotees believe that the stalagmite structure of ice symbolizes the mythological powers of Lord Shiva.
