One of the highly anticipated films, Ajith Kumar-starrer Thunivu was panned by critics and audiences for its weak script and over-the-top action sequences. Despite the criticism, Thunivu managed to walk away as a winner and was hugely successful at the box office. As stated in a report published in Koimoi.com, Thunivu closed its global box office run with a gross collection of Rs 200.57 crore. This includes Rs 122.10 crore from India (including Tamil Nadu and Telugu speaking states), which amounts to Rs 144.07 crore.

Apart from raking in huge numbers at the global box office, Thunivu also grabbed headlines due to its OTT release Netflix On 8 February. Streaming in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi languages, Thunivu has received a great response from the audience. Despite the fact that the film could not garner enough praise from the critics, it managed to strike the right chord with the audience. He appreciated that Ajith has always got something different to offer in his films. Some cinephiles commented that they installed Netflix only for the purpose of watching this film.
Thunivu revolves around the story of Darkdevil (Ajith), also known as Chief or Michael Jackson. His gang consists of members Kanmani (Manju Warrier) and others (Amir, Pavani and Sibi). Their lives take an interesting turn when they are approached to rob your bank under the leadership of Krish (John Kokken). Ajit and his gang decide not to accept the offer, but the situation tempts them to do so and they uncover a huge scam.
