After inter-religious marriage of Kerala politician, CPI(M) leader sparks ‘love jihad’ controversy, withdraws remarks

Communist Party of India (Marxist) local committee member and Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) leader Shijin Joisna eloped with Joseph, who was working in Saudi Arabia and had recently come home to Kozhikode in Kerala. Her relatives filed a police complaint and allegations of “love jihad” were made. The family members along with the people of the area took out a march to the police station.

CPI(M) district secretariat member George M Thomas said in an interview with a regional channel that the issue turned into a dispute for the CPI(M).love jihad“In some parts. He later retracted the statement and said that there is no such issue and it is a creation of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

Joisna’s father, Joseph, says she needs justice and does not believe she left voluntarily. He also said that he never made any allegation of “love jihad”.

“I can’t believe my daughter left of her own accord. She told me that she liked someone else and we were getting ready to have that marriage. The day she left, when we called, she told the family that they were not letting her go. I just want to meet my daughter.”

Joisna says that she volunteered with Shijin because she had decided to marry him and live together. “They are making allegations of ‘love jihad’. I am Christian and Shijin Muslim. We have our own decisions. I believe in Christianity and I have a right to live that way. No one is imposing anything on me. I will be a Christian till I die. No one is trying to convert me or force me to convert,” she said.

Shijin said they were two people who decided to be together.

The party’s Kozhikode district secretary P Mohanan said the CPI(M) does not find anything unusual in the marriage of two people. “As per the laws of the country, people of different religions can marry and live together. George M Thomas had made a mistake while reacting to this issue and he himself has understood this and informed the party. There is no ‘love jihad’ and it is something that the RSS and the Sangh Parivar have created to attack the minority community.”

Mohanan also said that some people were trying to get political advantage By creating discord between the two communities, and the CPI(M) will not accept it. The party held a public meeting on the issue on Wednesday.
