Whether you’re looking for books that might tempt you to read, or wondering what’s all the rage about some major titles, there are five books you should definitely read.

Books are a secret escape from our mundane lives. Some great writers have written masterpieces on magic, love, death, war, romance, murder and what not. Reading them is an enriching experience and a journey in itself. Exploring vastly different worlds and lives and relating to characters and struggles that flow from the author’s mind to your own is an absolute exercise.

These books should definitely be at the top of your reading list:-

Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank.

No reading list would be complete without a mention of The Diary of Anne Frank. Published in 1947, the classic book is a raw account of the horrors of the Holocaust in the Netherlands from the perspective of a 13-year-old Jewish girl. Her diary entries talk about issues of isolation from the outside world, hunger, boredom, and living in fear of being discovered by the Nazis.

Animal Farm by George Orwell

Animal Farm may appear to be a fictional novel, but it’s actually a witty political satire, with strong indictments of flawed ideologies, politicians’ tactics, and more. Published in 1945, it tells the story of farm animals who rebel against the human farmer who neglects them. They want to create a democratic society where all animals are equal. However, it is not that simple with an emerging power hierarchy and some succumbing to greed. The book covers all the events leading up to the Russian Revolution of 1917.

Assisted by Catherine Stockett

This historical fiction is about African Americans who worked in white households in Jackson, Mississippi in the early 1960s. The author has created three extraordinary women – a white writer, and two colored ‘house helps’. Everyone has their own unique issues and voices. They are also determined to do something that will change the fortunes of all women to come. The novel is filled with heartbreaking pain, humor, hope, and most of all, a sense of unity that gives these three women the strength to overcome the challenges they face.

The Last Queen by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni

The novel, published in 2021, is based on the real-life events of Jindan, who decided to rise from the daughter of a royal kennel keeper to become a powerful emperor. She was the last ruling queen of the Sikh Empire of India. Jindan rose to royalty after marrying Maharaja Ranjit Singh, who was succeeded by his son. She transformed herself from a loving wife to a warrior determined to save her people from the British.

The Ministry of Utmost Happiness by Arundhati Roy
