78% of school students found learning at home ‘burdened’ during pandemic: Government survey

At least 78 per cent of school students found learning at home during the pandemic a “burden” while 24 per cent of them did not have a digital device at home, according to the National Achievement Survey (NAS)-2021 conducted by the ministry. education. Last year NAS was conducted across the country for classes 3, 5, 8 and 10 on November 12. Around 34 lakh students from 1.18 lakh schools in 720 districts, both rural and urban, have participated in the survey. The last NAS was conducted in 2017.

According to the report released on Wednesday, at least 78 per cent of the students said that they found learning at home with a lot of assignments difficult during the pandemic. 45 per cent students said that online learning brings joy, 38 per cent respondents faced difficulty in learning.

Twenty-four percent of the students claimed that they did not have any digital device at home. 50 percent of students said that there is no difference between learning at home and school, while 80 percent said that they learn better in school with the help of their peers. Seventy percent of students said they have plenty of time to learn new things at home during the pandemic. Schools remained closed for several months across the country in view of the pandemic.

NAS covers government, government aided and private schools. The subjects covered for class 3 and 5 were Language, Mathematics and EVS; Language, Mathematics, Science and Social Science for class 8 and Language, Mathematics, Science, Social Science and English for class 10. “NAS 2021 aims to assess the progress and learning ability of children as an indicator of the efficiency of the education system, so that appropriate steps can be taken for remedial actions at various levels. According to the report, the average performance of students at the national level on a scale score of 500 begins to decline in higher classes. Similarly, the national average score at Class 3 level in Mathematics is 306, which comes down to 284. in class 5; 255 in class 8; and 220 in class 10. The NAS report also presented state wise performance.

Most of the states/UTs performed well below the overall national score, while states like Punjab, Kerala, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and union territories like Chandigarh showed better results than the national average. According to the report, the average achievement of schools in rural areas was lower than schools in urban areas in the same states/UTs. For example, the average achievement of schools in rural areas was lower than their urban counterparts in all states and union territories except Manipur and Daman and Diu in language in Class 8.

In terms of social-group-wise performance, the average performance of SC, ST and OBC students was lower in almost all sections of the states as compared to the general category students. For example, in Class 10 English, the national average score for general category students was 308, while it was 283 for SC students, 280 for STs and 289 for OBC students.
