3rd ODI canceled due to rain after Sri Lanka were all out for 166

The third and final ODI between England and Sri Lanka was called off without a result on Sunday due to heavy rain.

Although Sri Lanka were bundled out for 166 in 41.1 overs, they managed to avoid the embarrassment of a clean sweep as the weather turned the home team’s hopes down.

Rain had delayed the first toss and then the game was suspended at the end of the Sri Lankan innings. It continued to rain heavily after the innings break and the umpires had no option but to call off the game with only one innings completed.

Earlier on this tour of England, the havoc of Sri Lanka’s batting continued on Sunday as well. The Sri Lankan batsmen failed to click again in cloudy conditions when asked to bat by England captain Eoin Morgan, who won the toss delayed due to rain. In the eighth over, captain Kushal Perera (9), Avishka Fernando (14) and Pathan Nissanka quickly returned to the pavilion.

Dasun Shanaka’s 48 not out raised some hopes for the visitors but their hopes were short-lived as other batsmen failed to support him. Wanindu Hasaranga was the next major contributor to the score with 20 as the other batsmen failed to go again.

England bowler Chris Woakes, who replaced Mark Wood, David Willey and Tom Curran, took advantage of the conditions and troubled them all by exploiting the sensitivity of the Sri Lankan bowlers against swing. All-rounder Curran, who took four wickets for 35 runs, was the best bowler of the home team. Woakes took two for 28 in his 10 overs while Willie took two for 36 in seven.

England won the series 2-0.
