26 years of DDLJ: Did you know that Shah Rukh Khan initially turned down Aditya Chopra’s offer?

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge is one of the most iconic films ever made in India. Indeed, for many foreigners, this movie is the first word that comes to mind when they think of Bollywood. movie which stars Shah Rukh Khan And Kajol in the lead roles, is about finding love and fighting. DDLJ was a product of its times, and it demolished many clichés about ‘Western’ NRIs and the popular Indian wife in 1995. However, there are some interesting facts about the film that many people are unaware of. One of the most unexpected aspects of the film is that Shah Rukh Khan was not ready to sign for the film at one point of time. Film journalist Anupama Chopra reveals how Shah Rukh got to be a part of the film in his book Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge: A Modern Classic. He was not interested in singing in a beautiful setting and then eloping with the girl, as was common in Bollywood.

“Also, the other two Khans – Aamir and Salman – were doing well in boyfriend boy roles, and Shah Rukh was considered different,” she adds. Reportedly, there were several meetings for then budding filmmaker Aditya Chopra to sign Shah Rukh and then history was created.

With his outstanding performance in DDLJ, Shah Rukh earned the title of ‘King of Romance’ and Raj became a household name.
