The Allahabad High Court has said that there will be carbon dating and scientific survey of the Shivling-like shape found in the survey held on May 16, 2022, at Gyanvapi Masjid in Varanasi. How will this happen? The Varanasi court will take a decision on this. This work will be done under his supervision. On the other hand, on Tuesday, the Varanasi court has accepted the petition of the Hindu side demanding an ASI survey of the entire Gyanvapi complex, apart from the alleged Shivling.

As of now, the date of when the carbon dating will take place has yet to be decided. There is a hearing in this matter on May 22 in Varanasi court. Come, before this, let us know how to find out the age of something by scientific investigation.

50 thousand years old truth revealed with just 10 gram sample
The ASI had presented its report before the court on May 11 in a sealed cover. On the basis of this report, on May 12, Justice Arvind Kumar Mishra’s bench of the Allahabad High Court ordered the ASI to conduct a scientific survey and carbon dating of the upper part of the concrete figure found in the Gyanvapi campus. For this, not more than 10 grams should be taken from the upper surface of the figure. How can the age of an object of just 10 grams be ascertained? Before knowing this, see this graphic…

Anupam Sharma, Head of Geochemistry Department and Scientist at Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeology, Lucknow says, “Carbon dating technique can easily determine the age of any living thing. Also, with the help of this, the age of things like wood, coal, skin, hair and bone can be calculated. In simple words, in the atmosphere Anything that has carbon in it can be carbon dated.”

“10 grams of sample is too much for carbon dating. Because this process can easily happen even in milligram part of any object. In addition to carbon dating, radioactive isotopes, uranium and lead are used to measure the age of stones or rocks. Isotope methods are also effective. All these techniques are used in the scientific examination of stones.”

This is how carbon dating happens…
In carbon dating technique, the ratio between carbon-12 and carbon-14 is extracted in any object. To find out the age of a stone or rock, it is necessary to have Carbon-14 in it. Generally, carbon-14 is found in 50 thousand year old rocks. In such a situation, if this element is present in any sample brought for examination, then it means that it is 50 thousand years old.

What if carbon-14 is not found in the sample?… If carbon-14 is not found in the object during investigation, its age can be ascertained with the help of radioactive isotope method.

At present, the Supreme Court has sealed the place where the wujukhana is located regarding the security of the Gyanvapi campus. Seal means that there will be no tampering, damage, construction or sabotage. On this, the High Court said that the survey of ASI will be done keeping in mind the security standards. At the same time, the Muslim side in the case said that the place which is sealed on the orders of the Supreme Court, how can there be an investigation?

  • Let’s stop here. By now you have come to know how scientists do scientific investigation of anything. Know further what decisions were given by the Supreme Court, the Allahabad High Court and the Varanasi District Court on the concrete figure found in the Gyanvapi campus…

3 major decisions of the courts on the alleged Shivling

  • 14 October 2022: The Varanasi District Court rejected the petition of the Hindu side seeking scientific examination of the alleged Shivling on the grounds that scientific examination would damage the Shivling.
  • 17 April 2023: The Muslim side filed an application in the Supreme Court on the problem being faced in Namaz. On this, the Supreme Court ordered the Varanasi District Magistrate to solve the problem. Before Eid, arrangements were made for mobile toilets and tubs filled with water for Wudu within 100 meters of the Gyanvapi campus. However, the place where the alleged Shivling was found in the premises was kept sealed.
On 12 May, the High Court termed the order of 14 October 2022 of the Varanasi District Court as wrong. After this Vishnu Jain talking to the media.

From ancient Hindu texts to foreign literature, claims of Gyanvapi Shivling have been made. Let’s get to know them now..

Claim 1: Description of Gyanvapi Shivling in Gurucharitra

The best and latest evidence of the rock found in the Gyanvapi complex is from the 16th century. Gyanvapi has been mentioned in the book named ‘Gurucharitra’ written by Sanyasi Gangadhar Saraswati of Dattatreya sect.

Shivling has been mentioned in Gyanvapi in these verses of Gurucharitra.

Shivling has been mentioned in Gyanvapi in these verses of Gurucharitra.

Famous historian and archaeologist Lalit Mishra says, “Gangadhar Saraswati has described his Guru Narasimha Saraswati’s journey to Kashi in Gurucharitra. It is written in the 57th stanza of the 42nd part of the book-

Maheshwarate Poojani. Gyanvapin Kari Snan. Nandikeshwar Archon.
Tarakeshwar worship. Then you go ahead.

These lines mean that the pilgrims coming to Kashi used to meditate near Gyanvapi well earlier in the 16th century. After this, he used to worship Lord Maheshwar i.e. Vishweshwar Shivling after seeing Nandi. This is the order we get in writing.”

The concrete shape that was found on May 16, 2022 in the Gyanvapi campus. There is a huge statue of Nandi in front of it, whose face is exactly on the side where the wujukhana of the mosque is. Earlier this Nandi idol was in the mosque premises, but during the construction of the Kashi Corridor, it was brought to the part of the corridor after mutual consent of both the posts. Today, the place where the existing Vishweshwar Shivling is, the idol of Nandi is looking at its opposite side. In such a situation, the location of Nandi’s idol and the concrete figure found in Gyanvapi premises matches with the four-legged figures of Gurucharitra.

Claim 2: The original Shivling was hidden by the priests after the attack

MA Tshering's book Sacred City of the Hindus.

MA Tshering’s book Sacred City of the Hindus.

Book by London writer MA Shering ‘Sacred City of the Hindus’ There is mention of a story related to Vishweshwar Jyotirlinga. Tshering wrote in the book that on 18 April 1669, Aurangzeb issued a decree to attack the Vishwanath temple. His army completely demolished the temple, but the Swayambhu Jyotirlinga enshrined in it did not even light up. Because on that day the priests of the temple were protecting the God.

It is also written in the book that seeing Aurangzeb’s army coming, the priests of the temple hid the Shivling somewhere near the Gyanvapi well. Or it is also possible that the priests of the temple jumped into the Gyanvapi well to save the Shivling.

  • Now let’s know what the people directly related to this issue have to say on the scientific investigation to be held in the Gyanvapi campus…

‘Truth will emerge on its own after scientific investigation’
Harihar Pandey is the only surviving Hindu litigant who filed a petition for removal of the mosque from Gyanvapi premises in 1991. He says, “Scientific investigation of the Shivling found in the Gyanvapi campus is very important. When my case was being heard in 1991, I saw all these evidences in front of my own eyes. I went under the Gyanvapi campus. There Our koop (well) exists even today. The same well, which was made by Lord Shankar with his trishul. I think when the alleged Shivling is scientifically investigated, the truth will come out on its own.”

In 1991, 3 people filed a suit in the civil court to remove the mosque from Gyanvapi premises. These included Harihar Pandey, Somnath Vyas and Ramrang Sharma, a professor at Sampurnanand University. Pandit Somnath Vyas and Ramrang Sharma died a few years after the case was filed in the court. Now Harihar Pandey is the only party left in this case.

‘Can there be a hole in the Shivling? You tell…’
MS Yasin, the caretaker of the Gyanvapi Masjid and joint secretary of the Anjuman Arrangement Masjid Committee, says, “Whether you go to the Red Fort in Delhi or the Taj Mahal. In mosques, a tank is specially made for Wudu. Usually the water filled in the tank used to get hot. That’s why the tradition of making a fountain started in it, so that the water of the tank remains cool. The fountain found in the Gyanvapi campus was built for this reason.”

“The Shivling found is Aadi Vishweshwar Mahadev”
Former Mahant of Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Dr. Vice Chancellor Tiwari has claimed that it is described in Skanda Purana that Gyanvapi well was built by Lord Shankar with his trident 5000 years ago. This Shivling is also at the place just in front of Gyanvapi well, which Nandi is looking at. It means that the Shivling found is Adi Vishweshwar Mahadev.

Last year, during the survey on May 16, when a concrete figure was found in the Gyanvapi campus, Vice-Chancellor Tripathi gave up food for its worship. He said that until he gets the right to worship the Shivling found in Gyanvapi, he will not take food. Will continue to eat fruits while staying at home. The former mahant of Kashi Vishwanath temple had also filed a petition in the district court for the right to worship the Shivling found in Gyanvapi.

At last, let us know what happened date-by-date in the Kashi Vishwanath Temple-Gyanvapi Masjid dispute. First see the events of 1991 to 2021 through graphic…

After the survey was approved, a commission was appointed. This commission ordered videography of Shringar Gauri in the presence of both the parties.
