Government is bringing ‘National Retail Trade Policy’ for common shopkeepers. Through this, efforts will be made to make the business of retail traders easier by providing various facilities. This includes providing better infrastructure and cheap loans on easy terms.

Joint Secretary of Industry and Department for Promotion of Internal Trade Sanjeev said on Monday that an insurance scheme is being brought for all retail traders. This will especially help small traders. Work is also underway on a separate e-commerce policy for online retailers. “We want there to be synergy between e-commerce and retail traders,” Sanjeev said at a conference on FMCG and e-commerce.

There should be a system of single license instead of more than 20 laws: CAT
The Confederation of All India Traders (CAT) has demanded simplification of rules and regulations. CAT’s National Secretary General Praveen Khandelwal said that the National Retail Trade Policy should mainly have four things:

1. Single licensing policy instead of more than 20 laws applicable to retailers

2. Retailers get loans from banks and financial institutions at concessional rates

3. Special Accidental Insurance Policy should be brought for shopkeepers

4. A regulatory authority should be constituted for the e-commerce sector.

Traditional shops account for 3/4th of retail

  • Share of online sales channels: 6.5%

Retail sector will provide 25 million new jobs by 2030

The government’s focus is on the retail sector because it provides employment to crores of people. According to the ‘Invest India’ portal of the National Investment Promotion and Facilitation Agency, the retail sector is currently providing more than 3.5 crore jobs. According to the speed at which this sector is growing, it can create 25 million new jobs by 2030.
