In the year 2022, Gambia and Uzbekistan raised questions regarding the cough syrup made in India.

All cough syrups sent abroad from India will now have lab testing. Syrup can be exported only after testing in the lab. The new rule will come into effect from June 1.

Last year, 66 children died in Gambia and 18 in Uzbekistan. It was claimed that these deaths occurred after consuming cough syrup made in India.

Do not compromise with the quality of medicines
The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) issued a notification on Monday. According to the notification, cough syrup will not be sent out without examination and proof. An official associated with DGFT said that the quality of medicines exported from India will not be compromised. State governments and pharmaceutical companies should ensure drug testing before export.

In February, Tamil Nadu-based Global Pharma Healthcare had recalled all its eye drops. At the same time, WHO had issued an alert in 2022 regarding four cough syrups of India.

In which lab will the testing be done
The labs that the government has selected for testing. They include Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission, Regional Drug Testing Lab (RDTL-Chandigarh), Central Drug Laboratory (CDL-Kolkata), Central Drug Testing Lab (CDTL-Chennai Hyderabad, Mumbai), RDTL (Guwahati) and NABL.

Export of cough syrup worth 1.4 lakh crores from India
India exported cough syrup worth 1.4 lakh crores in 2022-23 while it was almost the same in 2021-22. India is a major manufacturer and exporter of medical products across the world. Not only this, more than half of India’s cooperation remains in the vaccination of any treatment in the world.

More than 50% generic medicines from India
More than 50 percent of the generic medicines needed in the world are sent from India. At the same time, about 40 percent of generic drugs are supplied in the US and about 25 percent of the drugs in the UK. India ranks third in the world in terms of pharmaceutical generation.

India’s pharmaceutical industry consists of 3,000 pharmaceutical companies and about 10,500 manual manufacturing units. More than 80 per cent of the antiretroviral drugs currently used globally to combat AIDS are supplied by Indian pharmaceutical firms.
