Rahul Tripathi hit a four in the third T20 match against Sri Lanka.

Former India selector Saba Karim has said that batsman Rahul Tripathi should be given a chance in the first match against New Zealand in Ranchi.

All eyes will be on Hardik Pandya’s team India when she takes on New Zealand in the 1scheduled tribe T20I on Friday. It’s a bunch of young and talented players who will challenge the full-strength Black Caps at home. Senior players including Virat Kohli, Rohit and others are not around but the selection dilemma does not get any easier. The fight for a spot in the playing XI is as tight as ever and it will be interesting to see who gets to play in the first match of the series at the JSCA International Stadium in Ranchi.

Meanwhile, former India selector Saba Karim has said that batsman Rahul Tripathi should be given a chance in the first match. After making his debut against Sri Lanka in Pune, Rahul showed his prowess with a quickfire 16-ball 35 in Rajkot. His brilliant cameo before Suryakumar Yadav’s century helped set India a mammoth target of 228 runs. Later, the Men in Blue went on to win the game by 91 runs.

“I would like to see Rahul Tripathi get more chances at No.3 as he did well in his second game. He batted at a good strike rate. When you have such a good batsman, there is no need to make too many changes,” Karim told India News.

“Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya are undoubtedly the number 4 and 5 batsmen. Play the role of Deepak Hooda at number 6.

Picking his pick for the top-order, Karim said that the management should give chances to players who have performed consistently in the recent past.

He said, ‘Team India should focus on the batsmen who performed in the last T20 series. The first choice openers should be Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan. Those who have performed well should be given chances.

With Prithvi Shaw recalled for the New Zealand T20Is, questions were asked about India’s opening combination, this time captain Hardik Pandya was asked how the duo of Gill and Ishan Kishan fared at the top during the Sri Lanka series .

However, before the first match, captain Hardik Pandya has expressed confidence in Gill.

Shubman Gill has done well and will start the series. The way he is batting, he was already in the team,” Pandya said on Thursday.
