Lucknow/Gorakhpur: The state government will celebrate India’s stellar performance in the Tokyo Olympics by organizing a grand event at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on August 19, where the Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will give cash prizes to all those sportspersons who have made the country proud.
The gold medalist will get Rs 2 crore, the silver and bronze medalists will get Rs 1.5 crore and Rs 1 crore respectively. The members of the women’s hockey team, who performed exceptionally well but finished fourth, would be given a consolation prize of Rs 50 lakh each. Apart from this, all 10 players from UP who participated in the Olympics will be given an additional Rs 25 lakh each.
Announcing this while felicitating 75 sportspersons, including three Olympians, at Gorakhpur’s Gorakhnath temple on Friday, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said: “We will honor all our Olympians and coaches with cash prizes on August 19. On this occasion, 75 players each from all 75 districts will be invited to participate in this event so that they too can take inspiration from our achievers.
“We will focus on providing good training to the players in the state. The coaches will also be paid well,” he said.
“Due to the efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India’s largest Olympic team participated in the Tokyo Olympics. During the challenging times of the pandemic, our players proved their mettle. When a player wins on the global stage, the pride of the country goes up,” he said.
“We have already announced that sportspersons from the state will get Rs 6 crore for Olympic gold, Rs 3 crore for silver and Rs 1 crore for bronze. We will also give cash prizes to Olympic participants and have decided to award prizes for Commonwealth Games and Asiad as well.”
The CM said that the government is trying to create a conducive environment for sports and since last few years wrestling and swimming competitions are being organized at Gorakhnath temple on the occasion of Nagpanchami. Praising the talented players of Gorakhpur, he said, “Due to Coronavirus we could not organize the event in 2020 and 2021. I asked the organizers to organize an event to felicitate our international, national, state and district level players.”
On this occasion, CM honored Olympians Prem Maya, Ranjana Srivastava and Preeti Dubey.
One crore rupees each will be given to all the 19 members of the men’s hockey team, which broke the 41-year-old tradition of winning bronze medals during the honor program on August 19. Although Lalit Upadhyay of Varanasi will get an additional Rs 25 lakh (since he is from UP), his total reward is Rs 1.25 crore. The head coach of the hockey team will also get Rs 25 lakh.
Sports Director RP Singh said that a detailed plan is being prepared and added that the event will go a long way in promoting sports in the state.
