YJHD writer Hussain Dalal on working with Ayan Mukerji, Ranbir Kapoor on Brahmastra: Bondages don’t change, they get better

Known for writing dialogues for films including Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, 2 States and Kalank, Hussain Dalal returned to the screen as an actor with the film Homecoming. The writer-actor once said that he mostly gets to do the parts of a friend or brother in the lead role. When asked what difference did his latest film make to him, he said, “It offered me a hero!”

“A failed singer or a musician who didn’t make it to the real world is a really interesting part of what I found. I only choose the roles that I get to play in them and the story I get to tell in them. So when the role was changed, it was fantastic,” said the Hichki actor.

Hussain, who got his big break as a writer with Ayan Mukerji’s YJHD, says he is yet to get his big break as an actor. After playing supporting roles in films like Margarita with a Straw, A Gentleman, Hichki and Toofan, he says he has not yet identified himself as an actor. “My first film Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani was the biggest career turner of my life as it changed my life. I am grateful for the love it got and how it turned out. As an actor, I am just starting to be honest and I am exploring this acting world. I am very selective about the projects that I do in terms of acting, I am still trying to figure out who I am and where I am.”

She has worked with Ayaan and Ranbir Kapoor again for the film Brahmastra. The film would later also be seen on the big screen for the first time with his girlfriend Alia Bhatt. We asked him about the bond he shared with the director and actor, and whether it has changed over the years. Hussain shared, “Artists grow more with the passage of time. All artists learn and do better. Bonds do not change. They keep getting better and stronger and we have been working on the film (Brahmastra) for so long. So nothing changes. We grow together.”

So, how does the industry view him as an actor or writer? He replied, ‘The industry can understand me however it wants. I am a writer and an actor. And of course, my writing work has been more popular. The impression is that I’m more of a writer, but I just want to work, so it doesn’t really affect me in that sense.”

Urging the audience to take some time out for his latest release Homecoming, he concluded, “Our film is very honest and has practical take on the lives of theater artistes. And please, if you have 90 minutes, watch it once and watch our movie Homecoming. There is no greater feeling in the world than just coming home.”

Helmed by debutant director Soumyajit Majumdar, the film stars Sayani Gupta, Plabita Borthakur, Tushar Pandey, Sohum Majumdar and Hussain Dalal among others. It is premiering on SonyLIV.
