Yash Johar’s death anniversary: ​​Bollywood producer’s memorable films

Yash Johar, the founder of Dharma Productions, breathed his last on 26 June 2004 at the age of 74. This year marks his 17th death anniversary. After working as a collaborator in various production houses (for Sunil Dutt, Dev Anand), Johar decided to form his own production house in 1976 and came up with Dharma Productions.

His banner is known for its films featuring lavish sets, dreamy exotic locations, visual extravaganza and ensemble casts. On his death anniversary, let’s cherish the films of prominent Bollywood producers who have entertained audiences over the years.

Dostana(1980)

It was Johar’s first film to be produced by Dharma Productions. This action drama film was directed by Raj Khosla. Dharma’s first production proved to be a huge hit and proved to be the fourth highest grossing film of the year. It had a stellar star cast including Amitabh Bachchan, Shatrughan Sinha, Zeenat Aman, Pran, Prem Chopra, Amrish Puri, Helen.

Agneepath (1990)

This cult film was directed by Mukul Anand. Once again, this Dharma Productions film was a multi-starrer with top Bollywood stars in lead roles. It starred Amitabh, Mithun Chakraborty, Neelam, Danny, Rohini Hattangadi. This action drama film was inspired by the life of a gangster from Mumbai. Karan remade the film in 2012 as a tribute to his father.

Gumrah (1993)

Johar’s fifth production film was Gumrah, an action crime film directed by Mahesh Bhatt. It went on to become one of the highest grossing films of that year. Apart from Anupam Kher, Sridevi, Sanjay Dutt played the lead role in this hit film.

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998)

Senior Johar produced Junior Johar’s first film. KKHH starring Shah Rukh, Kajol, Rani won the National Award for Best Film for Providing Wholesome Entertainment; With 8 Filmfare Awards.

Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003)

The film received 11 Filmfare nominations and won 8. The film by Dharma Productions had a scintillating backdrop as well. Directed by Nikkhil Advani, written by Karan, this rom-com was set in New York and featured an ensemble cast of Jaya Bachchan, Shah Rukh, Saif Ali Khan, Preity Zinta, Lillete Dubey, Reema Lagoo. This was Johar’s last film.

The other movies produced by him included Duniya, Muqaddar Ka Faisla, Duplicate, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. Post, Johar’s demise, his son Karan has been continuing the legacy of Dharma Productions.
