Yash Ateed will vote for the first leadership in the party’s 9-year history

Yash Ateed Party will vote to elect its leader for the first time since its inception in 2012, it was announced on Saturday.

Foreign Minister Yair Lapid is automatically a candidate and is expected to win the election.

Lapid has led Yash Atid since he founded the party and is set to become premier in 2023 as part of a rotation deal with Prime Minister Naftali Bennett.

While other candidates can put themselves forward till December 21, no one has said so far that they are interested in challenging Lapid. Only party members would be allowed to walk and there are no clear candidates.

Additionally, no possible extent of the party chief’s term has been reported.

The party will publish the new bylaws on Sunday to formally announce the plan.

According to Hebrew-language reports, about 1,000 party members will convene to elect a president at the party’s first convention on January 4, 2022.

The convention would be mainly composed of regional activists, regional directors and representatives of the faction in local councils.

The Walla news site reported that the bylaws would also define the rights and obligations of party members.

In addition to electing a president, there would be a new method for selecting the party’s slate for election, which would involve a committee composed of a current or former MK, party directors and two board members. The party shall have the right to reserve a protected slot in the list.

So far, the slate has been assembled by Lapid.

The internal elections come after years of criticism from opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu and other political rivals, who Lapid and Yesh Atid, often needed, over the party’s lack of primaries for the leader and its electoral slate, the former prime minister’s Likud. And there are many other cassettes. factions are occupied.

In September last year, Lapid rejected a call for a leadership vote by then-Yash Atid legislator Ofer Shelah.

Shela later left the party March to launch his own political movement before the election but dropped out during the race. If the reported voting rules are used for the next internal election of Yesh Atid, Shelah will likely be unable to contest.
