Xiaomi India announces major change in leadership amid money laundering probe

Xiaomi India On Friday, it confirmed reports that Manu Kumar Jain has stepped down from his leadership role in the country to become Group Vice President for Global Markets. In place of Manu, Xiaomi India is appointing Alvin Tse as General Manager, and Poco India’s Anuj Sharma joins Xiaomi once again as the company’s new Chief Marketing Officer.

The update was shared by the company on its social media channels on Friday.

These changes have been coming for some time, especially since Manu was embroiled in a conflict with the administrative bodies in India. Both Alvin and Anuj have been part of the Xiaomi ecosystem, allowing them to integrate seamlessly into the company’s business and operations in India.

Xiaomi India has also been accused of money laundering by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the past few weeks. The ED also seized funds worth over Rs 5,551 crore from a Chinese mobile manufacturing company for violation of the Indian Foreign Exchange Act. Such a huge amount in the name of royalty was remitted on the instructions of their Chinese “parent group” entities, it alleged.

Leadership changes have been made at Xiaomi India to clear the decks for Manu to work out of Dubai. With this tweet, Manu confirmed going abroad.

Before his departure, the ED had questioned Manu Kumar Jain at the agency’s regional office in Bengaluru last month.

With both Alvin and Anuj moving on from Poco, it remains to be seen what happens to the brand, even if Poco has teamed up with Xiaomi after becoming an independent brand a few years back.

Xiaomi has become the leading smartphone brand in India under Manu’s leadership, but over the past few quarters it has seen the gap between its rivals narrow. The likes of Samsung, Realme and Vivo are hot on the heels of the Chinese giant, and they would be hoping for more roads ahead in the market with such drastic changes at Xiaomi.
