Worldwide Kovid deaths cross 5 million, India with 4 countries record half of deaths

New Delhi: India, along with the United States, Russia, Brazil and Mexico, are among the countries that have recorded more than half of all global deaths due to the COVID-19 pandemic on an average of seven days.

According to a Reuters analysis, it took at least a year for the world to record 2.5 million deaths due to the coronavirus, while the next 2.5 million deaths were recorded in 236 days.

The global Covid-19 death toll has exceeded 5 million as of Friday, October 1, 2021, according to a Reuters tally.

The delta variant is the reason for the increase in the number of COVID-19 deaths across the world. Deaths due to the variant have mainly been reported among non-vaccinated people.

According to data released by Our World in Data, more than half of the world’s people have not yet received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

An average of 8,000 deaths per day were recorded during the past week, thus accounting for five deaths per minute.

Meanwhile, according to the Union Health Ministry, India has recorded 24,354 new Covid cases, 28,246 recoveries and 277 deaths in the last 24 hours.

The total number of COVID-19 cases in India is 3,37,66,707, out of which 2,75,224 are active cases and 3,30,68,599 are cured.

A total of 4,48,339 people have died, while 89,74,00,000 people have received the vaccination.
