World Population Day 2021: Theme, History and Significance Between COVID-19

Every year on July 11, the world celebrates World Population Day. The size of a nation’s population has a major impact on its development and operation. The larger the population of a country, the more difficult it is to develop rapidly. As a result, reducing overpopulation is essential, whether at a national or global level, to ensure the long-term development of our existing resources.

It took hundreds of thousands of years for the world population to reach one billion, and then it increased sevenfold in just 200 or so years. The world population crossed the 7 billion barrier in 2011, and is now at around 7.7 billion, with projected growth of about 8.5 billion in 2030, 9.7 billion in 2050 and 10.9 billion in 2100.

This substantial increase is mostly driven by an increase in the number of individuals reaching reproductive age and has been followed by significant changes in fertility rates, increased urbanization and accelerated migration. These trends will have far-reaching consequences for generations to come.

World Population Day 2021: Significance

Every year on 11 July, the world celebrates World Population Day, which aims to highlight the difficulties posed by overpopulation and raise awareness about how overpopulation can harm ecosystems and the progress of humanity. The day also discusses family planning, poverty, sexual equality, maternal health, civil rights and health concerns that women face.

India has the second largest population in the world after China, and in the current days of the COVID-19 pandemic, it proved difficult to deal with such a large population during the second wave of the pandemic, which increased the country’s death toll.

Consequently, it is important to emphasize on population management not only in the country but also globally.

Meanwhile, the day was further celebrated with resolution 45/26 by the United Nations General Assembly in December 1990.
