History of International Day of the Girl Child (History of International Day of the Girl Child)
International Day of the Girl Child 2021 was started by an NGO ‘Plan International’. It started as a project. This NGO had run an awareness campaign named ‘Because I am a girl’. The Canadian government was approached to expand the campaign internationally. The Government of Canada proposed to celebrate International Day of the Girl Child 2021 in the 55th General Assembly of the United Nations and finally the United Nations passed this resolution on 19 December 2011. After this, the date of 11 October was fixed to celebrate International Girl Child and after that, International Day of the Girl Child 2021 has been celebrated every year after the year 2012.
Importance of International Girl Child Day
The Sustainable Development Goals were adopted in the United Nations in 2017, which also include achieving gender equality and women’s empowerment. In view of this, by the year 2030, it has been set to help young girls to provide better health services, equal opportunities in education and all opportunities without any gender-based discrimination or violence.
Significantly, due to the corona epidemic, most of the world’s population has been forced to work sitting in front of laptops and mobiles, in such a situation, the second challenge is also that about 2.2 billion people worldwide still do not have an internet connection. In such a situation, especially the condition of girls is even worse.
Globally, the gender gap of Internet users has increased from 11 percent in 2013 to 17 percent in 2019. For the least developed countries, it has been around 43 percent. In the era of digital revolution where people are using technology in various ways to learn new skills and earn revenue, women and girls cannot be left behind in this matter.
