World Autism Awareness Day 2022: Theme, History and Significance

World Autism Awareness Day (WAAD) aims to bring attention to the obstacles people with autism face every day. As a major global health problem, autism needs to be further understood. Every year, World Autism Awareness Day is observed globally on 2 April to spread awareness about Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), a neurodevelopmental disorder that impairs a person’s communication and social interaction skills.

Symptoms of ASD can be detected before a child reaches the age of three, and the disorder is mainly due to genetics and biological differences in brain development. However, if the patient or parent seeks medical help as soon as possible after diagnosis, the disorder can be dealt with effectively.

World Autism Awareness Day 2022: Theme

This year, the theme of World Autism Awareness Day is ‘Inclusion in the Workplace’, which will feature a controlled roundtable discussion with individuals on the autism spectrum who have personally gone through difficulties and seen these new possibilities in the workplace.

In addition, the education of many students with autism is particularly hampered as the COVID-19 pandemic spreads across the world. United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) focuses on ensuring quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all.

World Autism Awareness Day: History

Over the years, the United Nations has celebrated diversity and facilitated the rights and well-being of individuals with disabilities, including those with learning differences and developmental disabilities. Similarly, earlier in 2008, April 2 was declared as World Autism Awareness Day by the United Nations General Assembly.

The resolution (A/RES/62/139) was enacted by the Council on 1 November 2007, and was adopted on 18 December 2007. Since then, it is celebrated annually on 2 April. In addition, World Autism Day is only one of seven official health-specific United Nations Days.

World Autism Awareness Day: Significance

To educate people about Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), this year’s theme promotes that people with autism have the same right to quality education as normal people. Modern education can help them to walk side by side with other people. The stakeholders should develop such an environment of quality education especially for these people.
