Track to Diplomacy: India-Nepal Rail Project to boost bilateral ties; Here’s what you need to know about it

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Nepal’s counterpart Sher Bahadur Deuba All are all set to inaugurate the train service between the two countries from Jaynagar in Bihar to Kurtha in Janakpur on Saturday. With the aspiration to take the bilateral ties between the two countries to a higher level, the Broad Gauge Rail Line Project will have a formal launch event at Hyderabad House in Delhi. The program will be organized through videoconferencing and both the leaders will flag off the first train on this section at around 12.15 pm.

In the first phase of the project, out of the total 69.08 km long section, 34.50 km (Jayanagar to Kurtha) is being opened, while the remaining line up to Bardibas in Nepal will be made operational in some time. The enterprise has a total of 2.95 km in India while the remaining 65.75 km is in Nepal.

Birender Kumar, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of East Central Railway (ECR) says, “This will greatly facilitate the pilgrims going from India to Janakpur Dham in Nepal. After the start of this rail service, travel will be smooth and business will get a boost. Apart from this, the movement of tourists will be facilitated, and the border area will also develop rapidly.

The operation of trains on narrow gauge between Jayanagar in India and Baijalpur in Nepal was started in 1937. Due to floods in Nepal, it was interrupted in 2001, but the train service from Janakpur to Jaynagar continued till March 2014. After a long wait, after eight years, the country will once again be connected by rail line.

There will be a total of eight stations and six halt stations in this section. It will also have 47 road crossings and 15 major bridges. In addition, there are 127 minor bridges on the route. As per the initial plans, the speed of 100 kmph will be allowed for passenger trains, while it will be limited to 65 kmph for freight.

To operate on the route, two sets of 1600 HP DEMU passenger rakes were supplied to Nepal by Konkan Rail Corporation Limited (KRCL). Apart from non-AC coaches, these rakes have two AC coaches each. KRCL is envisaged to run the operations and maintenance by Nepal Railways till it is able to do so on its own.

In July 2021, Indian Railways conducted speed trials on a section that was supported by Railway Nepal. It was declared fully fit and given for further commissioning in October 2021.

“Apart from being a technologically superior project, it is also a project of great importance for both the countries.
