Wimbledon Tennis 2021 News Day 7 Live Updates

Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Ashleigh Barty, Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev, Coco Gauff, Andrey Rublev and Inga Swietake are all in action on ‘Manic Monday’. After a break day at Wimbledon 2021, everyone is back on the court to start the fourth round of the tournament.

Chasing a sixth Wimbledon and a record-equalling 20th Major, world number one Djokovic is already halfway to becoming the third man to complete a calendar Grand Slam. Eight-time champion Federer, who takes on Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego, could become the oldest quarterfinalist at Wimbledon in the Open era. Federer has reached the last 16 of Wimbledon for the 18th time, just five weeks away from his 40th birthday.

‘Manic Monday’, when the men’s and women’s full fourth rounds are played, will no longer exist from next year as Wimbledon will stage matches on mid-Sunday. Another change will be made to the schedule this week, with the All England Club announcing that they will go full capacity crowds from Tuesday’s quarter-finals.

Second seed Daniil Medvedev, who made a two-set comeback for the first time in his career to beat 2017 runner-up Marin Cilic, will face Hubert Herkaz. Poland’s 14th seed Harcz is the only player in the fourth round not to miss a serve. Sebastian Korda, whose father Petr reached the quarter-finals in 1998, is celebrating his 21st birthday on Monday. He could reach the quarterfinals of a Slam for the first time by defeating 25th seed Karen Khachanov of Russia.

Canada’s 10th seed Denis Shapovalov, who knocked out two-time winner Andy Murray in the final round, will face semi-finalist Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain in 2019. Meanwhile, Italy will have two men in the last 16 for just the third time. And for the first time since 1955. While Sonego faces Federer, seventh seed Matteo Berrettini faces Belarus’ Ilya Ivashka, the 27-year-old world number 79 who won only one match before this Wimbledon.

Women’s world number one Ashleigh Barty, trying to win the 50-year title from fellow Indigenous Australian Ivonne Goolagong Kawle’s first crown, takes on French Open winner Barbora Krejcikova. The only British player left in the singles draw is 18-year-old Emma Radukanu, who defied her ranking of 338 to meet Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic in the second week. Radukanu has just finished his final school exams and has attracted many new fans, including rock star Liam Gallagher, the former Oasis frontman.

Germany’s Angelique Kerber takes on Coco Gauff, the only former champion in the women’s event. 17-year-old Gauff is bidding to become the youngest woman to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals since Maria Sharapova in 2004. The big-hitting women’s last 16 will feature the bottom half of the draw. Second seed Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus will face 18th seed Elena Rybakina. Sabalenka, who had not yet made the quarterfinals of a Slam, had 21 aces in three rounds, one less than the Russian-born Rybakina. Rybakina has won 96 percent of her service games in the first three rounds of the tournament.

Former world number one Karolina Pliskova, the eighth seeded Czech, has also scored 22 aces and faces unseeded Russian Lyudmila Samsonova. 65th-ranked Samsonova has used her wild card to record her best ever performance at a Slam. The 22-year-old is on a 10-match winning streak, after winning the Berlin grass court tournament as a qualifier for Wimbledon. Seventh-seeded former French Open champion Inga Swietek, who won just one match on the grass on the main tour ahead of Wimbledon, will take on 21st seed Ons Jabeur of Tunisia. Jabeur could become the first Arab woman to reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals with the win.
