Wimbledon: Novak Djokovic beats Miomir Kekmanovic to reach last 16 again

Three-time defending champion Novak Djokovic advanced to the fourth round of Wimbledon for the 14th time after beating Serbian compatriot Miomir Kekmanovic in straight sets on Friday.

Djokovic, who was trying to level with Pete Sampras as seven-time Wimbledon champion, won 6-0, 6-3, 6-4.

Friday’s win was the 330th victory of Djokovic’s Grand Slam career.

“So far, so good,” said the 35-year-old top seed, who has now reached the last 16 of a major for the 55th time.

“I expect high standards of myself. You always want to level up and things are shaping up well.”

The six-time Wimbledon champion has won the last three men’s singles titles at the All England Club.

Playing in his first Grand Slam main draw, the world number 104 defeated 22nd seed Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia 6-4, 6-3, 6-4.

Van Rijthoven, 25, proved his prowess on the grass by defeating world number one Daniil Medvedev in the final to win the ‘As-Hertogenbosch’ title last month.

“Before the tournament started, it was a dream for me to play with Djokovic,” said Van Rijthoven, only the seventh man to reach the round of 16 on his Grand Slam debut since 2000.

“So to be able to get that chance and maybe even play on center court or on Court 1 is beautiful and magical.”

The top seeded Serb will next take on Tim van Rijthoven of the Netherlands.
