India’s leadership IPL 2021, M S Dhoni Batted in the top five only twice out of four times he came to bat for Chennai Super Kings. At times he even sent Sam Curran ahead of him, raising questions as to why Dhoni, one of the greatest finishers of all time, is not batting in the top-half.
However, it is not as if CSK needs his services with the bat to take him out this time. The top half has worked well so far and the three-time winners have finished second in the standings with five wins out of the seven matches they have played.
Former India opener Gautam Gambhir has a theory as to why Dhoni prefers to bat at number one now. 7,
Gambhir said in Star Sports’ show Game Plan, “MS was a player who actually bats at No. 4 or 5, but we have seen in the first phase that he normally bats at No. 6 or 7. ” When he actually pushed Sam Curran in front of him too.”
He added, “The reason behind this is that he is probably trying to be a mentor and wicketkeeper, who can lead the team and keep wickets.”
Gambhir believes that Dhoni still has the power to make the best use of the last few balls in an innings but since he has stopped playing international cricket, it is not going to be an easy task.
“If the situation becomes such that he has to play maybe 8 or 10 balls, he can go there and hit them,” he said.
“It (however) is going to be difficult for him, because you are not playing international cricket. IPL is a very tough tournament, it is not like CPL and other leagues. IPL is where you face top quality bowlers. For me, I think the biggest challenge for CSK will be the need to fire the top order as that is not the case now.”
