Who was Kalyan Singh? BJP veteran and former UP CM who passed away at the age of 89 after prolonged illness

Lucknow: Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Kalyan Singh breathed his last at Lucknow’s Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) on Saturday after a prolonged illness.

He was earlier admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital on July 4 due to infection and low level of consciousness.

He died of sepsis and multi-organ failure, the hospital said in a statement.

Singh, 89, was undergoing treatment at the Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences before being shifted to PGI.

He became the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh for the first time in 1991.

However, during his tenure, Singh had to resign from the post of Chief Minister after the demolition of the Babri Masjid on 6 December 1992.

Singh, who was the face of Hindutva in Uttar Pradesh, became Chief Minister for the second time between 1997-99.

Singh, who left the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 1999, rejoined the saffron party in 2004.

He was elected BJP MP from Bulandshahr in 2004. Singh later became an independent MP from Etah in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections.

Singh joined the Samajwadi Party in 2009. He formed his own party Jan Kranti Party in 2010.

He joined BJP for the second time in March 2014.

Singh was appointed as the Governor of Rajasthan on 26 August 2014.
