Delhi received 138.8 mm of rain in the 24 hours ending 8.30 am on Saturday – the highest single day rainfall in the month of August since 2007 – it said.

Delhi recorded 138.8 mm of rain on Saturday, the Meteorological Department said, adding that the one-day rainfall in the month of August was the highest in 14 years and the ninth highest since 1961. According to the Meteorological Department, the national capital had recorded the highest ever rainfall. On 2 August 1961, the month of August received 184 mm of one day rainfall.

Delhi received 138.8 mm of rain in the 24 hours ending 8.30 am on Saturday – the highest single day rainfall in the month of August since 2007 – it said.

The maximum temperature on Saturday was recorded at 32.1 degrees Celsius, a notch below normal. The minimum temperature was recorded at 23.8 degrees Celsius, three notches below normal. Humidity was recorded at 100%.

The Meteorological Department has predicted a moderately cloudy sky with the possibility of light rain on Sunday. The maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 33 and 24 degree Celsius respectively.

The department said that a cloudy strip is passing over northern and central parts of Delhi, which is likely to cause thunderstorms, lightning and light to moderate rain during the night.

The capital received an unusually high 507.1 mm of rain in July, which was about 141 per cent above normal. This was the highest rainfall recorded in July and the second highest ever since 2003.

Overall, Delhi has received 582.8 mm of rain since June 1, when the monsoon season begins, against the normal 295.6 mm – more than 97 per cent.

Despite the monsoon coming two weeks after the normal date, the city saw 16 rainy days in July, making it the most delayed in 19 years.
